On July 24, 1862, Union General Ulysses S. Grant issued an order to the command of Companies A and B of the 5th Utah Infantry to march from Salt Lake City to Provo. The units were ordered to cross the Jordan River at Reeds Ferry on September 16 and 17, 1862. The unit reached Provo on October 3 and began its journey southward. On October 11, 1862, it arrived at Cedar Mesa Cemetery in what is now known as Round Rock. Company A was ordered to dig a grave for one of its members who had fallen in battle that day. On November 8, 1862, Company B crossed the Colorado River at Woolerville and continued its march southward. It reached Cedar Mesa Cemetery on November 15th. There both companies were placed under orders of Major-General John C. Fremont to encamp there until relieved by other units or by General Orville Ewing’s brigade which arrived from Salt Lake City on December 1st with orders to march them eastward through California into Oregon Territory over the snowdrifts that winter. Both companies left Cedar Mesa Cemetery for their new campsites around Christmas time 1863 after completing their military service in Utah during the American Civil War 1861-1865
