Saratoga Springs, Utah is a small town located in Logan County, Utah. The population of Saratoga Springs was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar City–Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Saratoga comes from the word "saratoga," meaning salt water and "spring" coming from the Latin word potestas which means power or ability. The first post office in Saratoga Springs was established on November 5, 1870. By 1880, there were four businesses in town- two stores and two sawmills. In 1893, Saratoga began receiving mail by stagecoach from Stroudsburg, PA via Cache Valley Railroad Company (later Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway). Mail service ended when Amtrak took over operation of these railways in 1971. A new high school was built in 1907 and originally known as Springdale High School; it later became known as Mountain View High School before being renamed again to its current name in 2002. This school district also operates an extensive vocational program which offers classes such as carpentry, welding, agriculture and home health care while providing instruction to more than 1,000 students annually through 10th grade. A new courthouse was constructed between 1912 and 1916 on Broad Street east of Depot Square; it served as both a court house and jail until 1928 when it became known as the Municipal Building annex to the then newly erected courthouse on Main Street adjacent to what is now Valley View Elementary School. As downtown SARATOGA SPRINGS grew increasingly popular with tourists for its natural beauty despite having no services other than two grocery stores (the only full time business in town), businesses started popping up all around town catering specifically to visitors- including several bars/restaurants along Depot Square (now Main Street). One such business that operated for many years before closing down is Elks Lodge #527 which sat just east of Depot Square across from Valley View Elementary School until 1998 when ownership passed away and it lay vacant until 2006 when it reopened under new ownership as Empire Burger & Grille with seating for 100+. When they arrived at what is now Saratoga Springs on April 12th, 1864 they named their new settlement after Major General Israel Putnam who had led an expedition against Mexico in1846 before dying at Palo Duro Canyon near present day Phoenixville, Pennsylvania some weeks later on April 26th at age 39 from wounds received during the assault on Mexican positions there which included heavy losses for our brave men under your command." Initially Saratogas spanned only 6 acres but quickly grew into an important agricultural center due to its location adjacent to major irrigation canals used for farming crops such as wheat, corn and cotton alike. After the Civil War ended many small towns were absorbed into larger ones such as Great Salt Lake City while Saratoga Springs continued to thrive with its own hospital/medical school/library system until it closed its doors in 1978 following a $14 million renovation project funded by local entrepreneur Harry Weitzman which saw the return of downtown businesses including several restaurants including Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream parlor where Colonel Sanders once served his customers!
