Sandy, Utah is a city located in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 17,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Davis County. The first settlement in Sandy was made on May 10, 1847 by George A. Smith and David W. Dayton with the purchase of a small parcel of land from John Wesley Powell. On July 26, 1847, the town plat was laid out and named for General James Hanks Richardson who had fought at Buena Vista and Cimarron Hill during the Mexican-American War. The original gridiron street system was implemented in 1848 when Sandy had its first post office opened under dateline "Salt Lake City". The first school was built in 1849 by Mr. Fenton on a lot donated by Major Isaac Morley which served as both the public school and church until it burned down in 1863. The early years of Sandy were plagued by economic scarcity due to mining operations conducted nearby including Butte Gulch mine which produced over 60% of Salt Lake's output at that time! However, through hard work and perseverance all businesses started up again thanks to railroad development; this helped improve life for many citizens especially those living along Main Street where stores could be found morning to night without having to go farfetched into miles-long tunnels! In 1897 an addition to downtown called "The Meadows" housing tract became available when lots were sold along Zion National Park's eastern edge just north of Sandy proper! This area soon became known as "the city limits" because no one wanted their turf taken away from them! However changes do happen here often enough that we feel like part of something larger than ourselves! Sandy, Utah is the most recent community to be incorporated in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. The city was approved by the Utah Territorial Legislature on February 6, 1912 and was founded on November 10 of that year as a small farming town named Sandy. It remained an agricultural community until 1938 when it became a suburb of Salt Lake City. On December 4, 1961, Sandy became its own municipality and continued to grow in size until it reached its current population of over 200,000 residents on January 1, 2008.
