Sandy, Utah is located in the heart of the Wasatch Front, one of the most sparsely populated regions in the United States. However, this small town has a rich history that can be found buried beneath its surface. The first settlers to live in Sandy were farmers who came to the area during the 1850s. By 1870, there were over 100 families living in Sandy. At that time, Sandy was an agricultural community with a single store and a few homes. By 1900, however, there were over 500 people living in Sandy and the community had developed into a busy commercial center with four banks and several businesses. During World War II, Sandy became known as one of the biggest military bases in Utah due to its importance for bomber operations. In 1945, though, following Operation Crossroads which aimed to secure strategic underground fuel supplies for Allied forces fighting WWII, Sandy’s role decreased significantly. After 1945, much of what remained of Sandy’s commercial district was taken down by demolition efforts undertaken by local developers looking to build new homes or businesses on land that had been vacant for years. In recent years, some effort has been made to preserve parts of Sandy’s historical past including plans for an exhibit about high capacity kits (HCK) at the nearby LDS Museum of History & Culture. The goal of this exhibit is to help visitors learn more about how HCK have impacted various aspects of life throughout history and how they continue to play an important role today.

In 1855 Brigham Young directed his Latter Day Saint leaders to create Cache Valley—a region extending from Provo southward past Sandy—solely for their own internal use and development by settlers who would be brought into Cache Valley through emigration under new leadership including John Dutton and George Atherton; young Mormons organized themselves into settlements called Richardson's Station near present-day Logan; Salt Lake City was founded nearby at what is now West Jordan on July 24, 1858 primarily because LDS leader James Waddell desired an open portage route between Cedar Mesa south down river and Provo north past Salt Lake City so goods could be transported upriver for export to Europe during this period before British importation boosted prices of goods exported from America The community developed slowly due largely to lack of transportation options given that no railroad ran through Cache Valley until 1907 when Utah State Route 330 was built just outsideOf Sandy along I-15 providing easy access both northbound and southbound making it possible for entrepreneurs like Lassen Cement Company president Hiram Sorenson to bring products directly from factories in Ogden or even further upstream at Taylorsville while keeping costs low since materials could still be hauled by wagon or horseback It wasn't until after World War II when Federal Highway construction began which made travel between Pullman &Cache Valley much easier also increasing trade with nearby towns such as Midvale connecting Cache Valley with downtownSalt Lake City via I-15
