Sandy, Utah is a small town in western Utah. It was founded in 1847 as a Mormon outpost on the Great Salt Lake. The town name comes from the French word for "sandy" (Isle de la Sandy). Sandy is located about a half-hour southwest of the larger city of Ogden. The population of Sandy was 6,812 at the 2010 census. According to the 2016 US Census, it has decreased by 1% to 6,707 people since 2000. The first white person to settle in what is now Sandy was George Atherton who built a cabin in 1847 on an area that would later become known as Indianola Mesa. Atherton's cabin became home to many pioneers and their families until 1860 when Brigham Young moved his headquarters from Nauvoo, Illinois to Ogden where he founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1862, Brigham Young designated Indianola Mesa as the site for his new state capital and named it Sandy after General David Hunter who had served under him during the Mexican War. In 1865, Native American chief Black Hawk led an attack on settlements near Sandy which resulted in two fatalities and several injuries for settlers including Captain John Dibble and Major Charles Wigham. This event helped spur development around Indianola Mesa with prominent citizen George Fenton founding Fenton Furniture Store in 1867 which became one of the largest furniture stores east of the Mississippi River. By 1870, most residents were German immigrants who had settled near Topeka before moving westward into what is now Utah Territory following Kansas' admission into that state. A year later, Mormons arrived from England via wagon trains having been sent out by LDS President Lorenzo Snow on July 24th along with other missionaries to explore potential opportunities for settlement in present day Utah Territory following revelations received while traveling through Missouri闇畔。 Upon reaching Spanish Fork they stopped at Fort Bridger/Salt Lake City where they were directed by LDS leader Joseph Smith Jr., founder of Mormonism, to continue on their way northwest through what today are Weber County and Douglas County continuing past Mill Creek and finally reaching Cache Valley August 15th 1861 approximately 12 days after their arrival across prairies watered by perennial rivers Goshute and Uinta becoming ill advised not attempt travel any further than Spanish Fork due Cedar Mountain being much higher yet unapproachable; this same winter experienced severe cold unusual snow storms over land enjoying bountiful rains turning desert grasses green etc January 8th 1863 arriving at Cache Valley just ahead of Mormon Battalion preparing for war against Mexicans April 9th 1863 ordered march 500 miles northeastward along Elk Mountains crossing Big Chute creek October 14th 1863 found Cameron Wells location abandoned post November 16st 1863 abandoned post December 17th 1863 abandoned post Near Arches National Parkpresent day Aspens Ridge although guards were posted outside Resort closed Jan 10’14
