Sandy, Utah is a city located in the Wasatch Front region of north-central Utah. The population was 31,471 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in that area after Provo. Sandy and its metropolitan area include an estimated population of over 460,000 people. The city is named for General George A. Smith who fought in the American Civil War and founded Salt Lake City in 1847. Sandy has a rich history dating back to the time when it was part of the Spanish Empire on the Great Salt Lake. In 1868, Brigham Young selected Sandy as one of his six original townships in what would become Utah. It is thought that General George A. Smith (1811-1895) discovered salt marshes near present day Sandy on December 10th, 1868 while exploring east side of Great Salt Lake as part of his military campaign against Mexican forces stationed there under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. On October 17th 1870, General Smith led an attack against Mexican troops at Jarrytown south of present day Sandy which resulted in a successful victory and forced their withdrawal from eastern Utah Territory into Mexico where they remain to this day today! From 1865 until 1912, Sandy was known as "The Hub" or "Center" for wagon trade between southeastern Utah and Juarez County, Mexico due to its location at mouth of Cache Creek ravine between Cache Valley and Juarez County - thus affording travelers easy access both ways! Sandy, Utah is a small town in Ogden County, Utah. The population was 2,649 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Sandy was founded on November 5, 1896 by Brigham Young and his brother-in-law George Atherton. The town became an agricultural center due to its location near the then new Sandy Creek irrigation ditch system. The first post office was established in 1898 and remained in operation until 1907. In 1912, Sandy married Emma Lazarus and they moved to Salt Lake City where they lived for many years before moving back to Sandy in 1978. They have three children: Lewis (born 1959), Jessie (born 1961) and John (born 1965). The economy of Sandy has been heavily reliant on agriculture ever since it was founded with some light manufacturing also taking place during this time including a few businesses that manufactured radios and other electronics products early on such as Radio Shack which still operates out of the old schoolhouse there today. In recent years, significant housing development has taken place in the town with several high-end subdivisions being built over the past few decades as well as a number of smaller residential buildings along Main Street currently housing various types of businesses as well as residences for people who work or live in Sandy proper - making it one of the most active commercial districts within even smaller towns like Park City, Logan Valley and Herriman these days! The population of Sandy increased rapidly after the opening of the Utah State Line in 1850, and by 1858, it had reached 2,500 people. In 1870, a railroad was built through Sandy and soon there were large businesses and homes. The early days of Sandy were difficult as most of the land had been bought from Native Americans. However, over time things changed and they started to get rich from their resources. The city became a major center for commerce and trade with neighboring towns. In 1916, a tornado hit Sandy and caused widespread damage including 100 homes that collapsed or were destroyed. Despite this event, Sandy continued to grow until World War II when many factories closed down because of the war effort. However, during postwar years there was an increase in development around town with new housing being built as well as industry such as auto manufacturing and shipbuilding. Today, parts of Sandy are still highly industrialized with many high-tech companies headquartered here.
