Sandy, Utah is a small town located in the Wasatch Mountains of southern Utah. It was founded in 1847 by Captain John S. Cook, who named it for General James K. Polk, then President of the United States. The first post office was opened in 1851. In 1855, the town acquired land from nearby West Jordan and incorporated as a village. In 1907, Sandy became an independent city and remained so until 1980 when it merged with Provo to form Provo-Salt Lake City Combined Statistical Area (CSA). As Cedar Rapids grew rapidly during World War I – aided by increased military spending amid patriotic fervor – Sandy saw its own growth paralleling that of Cedar Rapids but did not experience nearly the same level of development due to expensive federal assistance which went towards building larger factories downtown instead of developing smaller businesses nearby like thoseowned by local entrepreneurs such as George Waddell (founder/president/chief executive officer) & his family members.)
