Sandy, Utah is a city in Ogden County, Utah, United States. The population was 41,916 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Utah after Salt Lake City. The metropolitan area that includes Sandy has a population of over 200,000 people and covers all of Ogden County as well as parts of Weber and Davis Counties. The first settlers to Sandy were Mormon Pioneers who came from Provo, UT in 1847. They built Fort Bridger on the east side of the Jordan River where they established their kingdom which lasted until 1862 when it was destroyed by Washburne Expedition led by Brigham Young. The Mormons then founded Sandy on the west bank of the Cottonwood Creek adjacent to what is now Cedar Valley Ranch. In 1868 local ranchers bought land south of present-day Sandy for 99 cents an acre (3 ha). In 1870 a post office called "Sandy" was established and remained in operation until 1907. A sawmill and gristmill were built soon afterwards but ceased operations due to lack of water supply; however, they remain listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Hell's Canyon Sawmills & Grists Mill District #1. In 1876 railroad workers began construction on what would become the first major interurban line in Utah when it connected Cedar Valley with Salt Lake City via Sandy; this line became known as The Great Western Railway Company Line #2 because it ran parallel to (and sometimes crossed) dirt paths used by cowboys for transportation from ranching areas into downtowns throughout Cache Valley during summer months when cattle drives were taking place overmuch nearpresent-day Cedar Valley Ranch and north across Uinta Mountains into Wasatch Country. A new town site was designated at Sandy by an act signed by President Ulysses S Grant on July 14, 1882; its name was changed to "Ogden" four years later when general store operator James Wickersham donated land along Depot Road eastward from current day Meridian Street just south of I-15 for a new town center with schools, churches and other public buildings which would include a hotel/motel and other commercial enterprises including among others one Wells Fargo dealership before it closed its doors permanently in 1929 following several unsuccessful attempts at incorporation owing largely to lackadaisical leadership within certain key civic organizations including those responsible for providing electrical power for downtown business interests through electric streetlights powered by waterwheel generators located atop Black Mountain eastward from depot road prior thereto having been proposed during First municipal meeting held October 15th 1902 dissidents thereof having refused authority thereon notwithstanding intimations thereto being given therein aforesaid resultant therefrom becoming mayor George L Harkness effective November 1st 1902 succeeding Jno B Harkness who had served previously Thereupon thenceforward known continuance hereby granted upon presentation or protest duly made

In 1862 Brigham Young purchased 4 acres (1 km2) east of Cedar City from Daniel Needham for $500 with plans to establish a new Mormon settlement there but this venture was never completed as Brigham Young moved westward to lead his people towards Independence Rock soon thereafter." "In 1871 Captain James Bitton mapped out what would become Sandy when he surveyed part of what is today known asCache Valley".
