Sandy, Utah was founded in 1896 by George W. Richards and James F. Watt as a small town on the Great Salt Lake. It quickly became an agricultural center, with cotton, corn, and other crops being grown in the area. In 1912, Sandy became one of the first towns in Utah to be incorporated as a city. The city experienced rapid growth during the 1920s and 1930s, thanks to its location on the edge of salt flats and its easy access to transportation. During World War II, Sandy joined other cities in southern Utah in support of the war effort; it served as headquarters for various military units and hosted large crowds of soldiers and civilians who came to see President Franklin D. Roosevelt speak at BYU University. After the war ended, Sandy saw significant population decline until the late 1990s when it began to rebound with new development (including a new downtown district).
