Sandy, Utah is a city in Southern Utah County, located in the Wasatch Mountains. The population was 9,821 at the 2000 census. The name Sandy comes from Spanish meaning "shore" or "prominence." The city was founded by Mormon pioneers on July 24, 1847, as part of an effort to end the Great Salt Lake Valley War between Brigham Young's United States Army and Mexican forces. The original town site sat on high ground east of present-day Sandy View Elementary School and west of present-day Sandy Park Cemetery. On April 6, 1850, pioneer Wm. H. Romney set out from Cedar City with 12 other Latter-day Saints under the leadership of LDS leader James Ewing to establish what would become Sandy. Romney's group reached Deadwood Canyon late on April 8 after spending two days walking through difficult terrain following Native American trails that led them down into what is now Cache Valley. They camped for three nights near present day Deadwood Canyon before continuing their journey the next morning over high ridges and valleys to reach Deadwood Creek which they crossed at a ford near today's Mount Carmel Tunnel south of town. They arrived at Soda Springs about 4 p.m., just in time for dinner provided by local Mormons who had been gathering firewood since early morning that day. On May 2 Brigham Young decided to move his headquarters from Nauvoo ( Illinois) due to political unrest within his church following revelations regarding plural marriage and polygamy which had recently spread throughout Missouri River valley settlements northwest of Nauvoo. He ordered all Latter Day Saints living in Illinois back across the Missouri River into Iowa Territory including Sandy where they established a new colony called Deseret Village on July 24th, 1847 less than one month after arriving in Utah Territory proper via wagon train from Nauvoo (now Chicago). That same day sixteen more LDS pioneers left Nauvoo under Handy Cement Company founder John Atherton with instructions to find land suitable for farming and build homes along Intermountain Ranges Road leading westward from Provo towards Beaver Lake outside Independence Ranch today known as Ute Mountain Range parallel but north of I-80 exit 10 miles east of downtown Salt Lake City

It grew rapidly after incorporation and by 1916 had reached 1,500 people. By 1922, the population of Sandy had reached 3,000 people and by 1936 it had reached 5,000 people. In 1938 the city limits were enlarged to include what is now Weber County. On February 24, 1959 Sandy became an international city with the merger of its two predecessor cities - Sandy City (founded 1912) and North Jordan (founded 1894).
