Sandy, Utah is a small town in Southern Utah located about an hour’s drive from the central city of Ogden. The name Sandy was given to the area by early Mormon settlers who named it after Samuel S. Sandy, one of their leaders. The first post office in Sandy was established in 1847 and it operated until 1872. In 1902, the townsite was enlarged when the Uinta Mountains were carved out of Southern Utah and became part of the new state of Utah. Today, Sandy is a thriving community with a population of about 1,500 residents and it is home to two colleges - Brigham Young University-Hawaii and Utah State University-Provo. The economy of Sandy depends largely on agriculture which produces hay, oats, potatoes and other vegetables; manufacturing which includes some light manufacturing such as paper products; trade which includes agricultural supplies and services; and tourism which provides jobs for locals as well as visitors. The town’s namesake Samuel S. Sandy spent his early years in this area between Soda Springs (now Davis) County on the east side of the Uinta Mountains and Great Salt Lake on the west side near present-day Heber City (then known as Provo). In 1827 he founded what would become Cache Valley Agricultural Society with donations from local pioneers including George Waggoner (the founder of Price Waterhouse & Co.) After years working hard to improve land holdings around Cache Valley he sold them off to others over time until his death at age 73 in 1892. His wife Julia donated $5,000 towards development at what would eventually be called Park City or Sandytown according to current plans developed over many decades by various residents/planning commissions formed during that time period. One interesting tidbit about Cache Valley Agricultural Society is that they raised enough money from sales activities plus gifts/donations from members “to purchase 640 acres northward extending into Atchison County where they laid out Henry[ Ford]” according to historian Don Haughey whose book "Cache Valley: A History" also goes into more detail about this group's history including references to sources such as letters written by pioneer James Irvine along with sketches made during excavations done adjacent to today's Green River Dam reservoir Showing evidence for irrigation systems back then just east of Cache Valley Agricultural Society property now part of West Jordan Heritage Area
