Sandy, Utah is a small town in the Wasatch Mountains of south-central Utah. It is located on the eastern edge of Carbon County, about 50 miles (80 km) northeast of Ogden and 45 miles (72 km) east of Layton. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. The name Sandy comes from the ancient Hvide people who settled there in the early 1800s. The first permanent settler in what is now Sandy was John C. Fremont, who founded a ranch there in 1859. He named it Fort Bridger after his home state, Nebraska. After Fort Bridger was destroyed by Indians in 1863, some settlers moved to Sandy from nearby Lehi and started a farm there in 1865. The town began to form around this new settlement when road construction began nearby in 1867 and railroad transportation arrived soon afterward. The town gradually grew as more people came to live there; by 1910 its population had reached 2,000 people. However, World War I interrupted growth until 1919 when it caused an influx of refugees from Europe who were displaced by war efforts throughout western Colorado and eastern Utah. Once again growth resumed as businesses opened up and jobs created; by 1930 the population had reached 4,500 people. During World War II many residents chose to stay behind while their homes were bombed or damaged; due to this decision the population decreased slightly during that decade but increased rapidly following 1945 when he war ended with Japan’s surrender. In 1960 Sandy became an incorporated city with a mayor-council system; since then its growth has been steady but modest as various businesses have closed or relocated away over time). In 1980 parts of Sandy were annexed into Layton so that they could share services provided by both cities under one management system; however this annexation did not result in any significant increase in formal business activity within either city which continued to rely largely on local trucking and delivery services for most goods transported through those areas). Over time several professional golfers have called Sandy their home including Phil Mickelson (2005), Tiger Woods (2006 & 2007) & Rory McIlroy (2011).
