The city was platted in 1850 by Captain John Dutton,[6] who named it after Provo Mayor Samuel Hales Salt Lake City.[7] The first post office opened in 1851; it was renamed Provo 9 years later due to its location near Provo's main commercial center then called "the Junction".[8] In 1858,[9] Mormon pioneers organized Deseret News which published its first issue from Nauvoo (now Chicago).[10][11] By 1860, salt marshes east of downtown were full of brinewater leading upriver towards Nephi Bayou where ships could tie up for weeks waiting for passage while goods arrived dry dock onto shore—a situation that continued until 1965 when an irrigation project diverted lake water upstream so that shipping no longer needed to wait for passage; henceforth Salt Lake City grew rapidly without any need for docks or canals.[12][13][14][15][16]: The growth of Salt Lake City wasn't limited only to its physical borders: annexed peripheral neighborhoods like Highland Heights and West Jordan began growing rapidly during this time too because they were catered specifically to LDS Church members (mostly farmers) who needed accessto good schools, churches and medical services unavailable within walking distance outside their homes or villages. Today these areas are known collectively as "Mountain View".
