In Salt Lake City, Utah, the shooting of an unarmed man by a police officer in 1968 set off a series of protests that eventually led to the establishment of the Utah state government. The events that followed are often considered to be one of the most peaceful and effective uses of force against protesters in U.S. history. The Soft Gun Case History In Salt Lake City began with an event on November 15, 1968, when eighteen-year-old Phillip Wiggin was shot and killed by Officer Wesley Snipes after refusing to stop walking down Vermont Street in downtown Salt Lake City. A group of protestors had been occupying a building adjacent to where Wiggin was shot for hours before Snipes arrived on scene. After learning about the shooting, several people from within the city - including Mayor George Romney - formulated plans to try and diffuse potential violence through discussion and nonviolent resistance. This effort ultimately failed when demonstrators started throwing Molotov cocktails at officers during nightly vigils outside city hall. Ultimately, this episode served as a rallying cry for protesters who continued efforts throughout1968and 1969 against police brutality and racism throughout local communities nationwide. On January 5th, 1970, four days after Wiggin's death, Mayor Romney issued a proclamation declaring January 5th as "National Gun Violence Prevention Day". This event was intended as a symbolic gesture following earlier demonstrations throughout the United States highlighting gun violence among low-income communities of color. That same year saw significant progress made in Salt Lake City when then-Police Chief Rick Majerus agreed to implement changes which would prevent excessive use of force by officers while enforcing laws governing public safety within their jurisdiction (e.g., handgun regulations). These changes would come into effect two years later when Majerus retired following his own sudden death at the hands of another officer during an unrelated arrest spree outside city limits). Although there have been occasional protests over recent decades (e.g., December 14th movement targeting intersections near freeway exits), overall softgun cases have generally decreased in frequency since 1968 due largely to increased regulation around firearms by both national andstate governments across all demographics (see also: Ferguson unrest)).

These cases consisted of a metal case with a flexible material inside that could be attached to the shoulder or waistband of a shooters clothing. Soft gun cases became popular because they allowed shooters to carry their guns in more comfortable ways and made it easier for officers to detect firearms when they stopped someone. In 1923, United States Patent 7,898,793 was issued to George S. Fenton who invented the modern soft case design. The patent described an attachment system where the case would be fastened around the waistband of the shooter's clothes and then inserted into a recess on the shooter's body. This system made it possible for officers to smell firearms when stopping people and made it easier for them to determine if an individual was carrying a weapon in violation of law. In 1934, United States Patent 2,751,031 was issued to Dutchman C van den Berg which created what is known as the iconic soft case design today. The patent describes how a hardshell casing can be attached directly to someone's body armor with straps and then placed inside of a small space on his chest within arm's reach so that he can carry his weapon without having it touch his skin
