On July 20, 1868, Brigham Young appointed John D. Rockefeller as the first president of the Utah National Bank. The bank was located in City Hall on Main Street in Salt Lake City. In 1907, the building was moved to its current location on Temple Square and became the home of the LDS Church's Welfare Fund. On October 15, 1968, when it became part of The Mormon Church, the bank became known as "The Salt Lake National Bank". Salt Lake City is one of the oldest cities in America and has a rich history dating back to 1800 when it was founded by captains James W. Woolley and David Waddell on an area now known as Temple Square. Salt Lake City businesses have been around since before local pioneer Daniel H. Wells arrived in 1847 to found what is now called Midvale Business Park east of downtown on Kimball Avenue. Wells established a stagecoach stop at what is now called First Ward Station which served travelers heading westward from Nauvoo until he discontinued operations in 1849 after construction of the Nauvoo Railroad completed bypassing his town limit! When Saints were forced out of Nauvoo they relocated to this territory they named Deseret (now Provo) where they built their first church and began trading with other communities along I-15 corridor including Kaysville, Orem and Sandy Hills Creek settlements that preceded Salt Lake City by many years! In 1850 Brigham Young decreed that all male citizens over 21 must obtain a license from county sheriff for carrying pistols or shotguns “in common use for self-defense or hunting purposes” although there were no laws governing handguns at this time! A few months later President Young issued another proclamation stating handgun licensing would become an “unlawful traffic law” punishable by up to two years imprisonment and/or a $500 fine!! It wasn't until 1861 when new Territorial Governor Burton ordered city ordinance establishing restrictions on handguns purchased within city limits while also prohibiting any sales without license!!! Following Platte River War fought between Mormons loyalists under US general Ulysses S Grant vs US troops led by General Richard Milborne Utah Agricultural Society was formed providing financial assistance to farmers affected by war - first such society organized in America! When militia units closed down agricultural societies across state due militia shortages during Reconstruction era these groups pooled resources forming Intermountain Gun Club which met monthly at Palace Theatre near South Temple – members included banker John D Rockefeller Sr who loaned club $1,000 !! After Repeal Act passed March 4th 1865 outlawing slavery it became legal for people owning slaves within territorial boundaries free & Unarmed but still considered slaves!!! In 1888 Laws were passed regulating Hours worked & Preexisting Conditions prevailing inside Municipal Limits – temperance movement gaining momentum here Initially led by women religious sisters working at Southern Pacific Railway Depot adjacent Capitol Building BUT eventually reaching men too!! Protective Order placed upon Women Jan 1st 1889 banning them from entering central business district except during daylight hours accompanied by husband OR parent !!
