From Missouri they went south until they reached Nauvoo where they established their headquarters before continuing their preachings eastward through Illinois into Ohio () before arriving at Cincinnati (), Pennsylvania () on October 24th 1841 (). While working in Pittsburgh() Smith lost control over his mind after eating cod liver oil (), leading to his death four days later (October 25th). Upon learning about Smith's deathJoseph Cowdery purchased his body from Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Harrisburg(), Pennsylvania () where he was buried next to John Taylor .
