By 1850, however, exploration had revealed no viable mineral resources near to make a go of it as a town. So Brigham Young and his fellow Mormons set out from Nauvoo in Illinois to found what would be known as “the Promised Land” based on predictions made by LDS leader Joseph Smith Sr.. They reached British Columbia before winter arrived; so they continued south into what is now Oregon Territory via Oregon Trail #2 and camped around Mount Hood until spring 1865 when they started up themountain again to find new land promised them by Smith…..In late November 1865–early December 1865 Hyrum Smith came down with smallpox while grazing his horse outside Fort Bridger which then became our first hospital………The original building – located at Seventh and Main Streets today — served as both courthouse and jail from 1861 until 1907….As one aspect of Temple Square Redevelopment Plan (1987), Mayor Rocky Anderson announced plans for landmarking 10 blocks east or northeast of Temple Square including two blocks east/ northeast of Nauvoo House where Joseph Smith II lived after he was excommunicated from the LDS Church in 1830…………Salt Lake Tribune front page dated January 3rd 1860 announcing construction begins eastern side Block B Dearborn Street Today’s First Presidency Building stands at this site within boundaries proposed for landmarking underAnderson plan……….On November 4th 1886 Lorenzo Snow delivered his last sermon here before his death less than two weeks later…………………………………………………………………………………..
