A mob set fire to Church buildings across Utah on December 3rd but fortunately only damaged a few structures and no one was killed or injured…………………..Today North American postage stamps show images related either directly or indirectly to early Latter Day Saint pioneers such as handcarts carrying goods up Snow Canyon Pass east from Provo into Winter Quarters shortly after settlement began……………………………………….It was generally thought at first that pioneer violence against Native Americans was an unintended side effect rather than something premeditated by Brigham Young……….After becoming president’s advisor on Reconstruction following Civil War Ulysses S Grant directed military commanders nationwide to deal effectively with “Hicksites” (Mormon dissidents)................................................................…………….In 1870 John Derry wrote: “I have frequently seen men take rifles* [*Rifles were not allowed inside LDS churches] go into those [Indian] villages where there were hundreds or thousands living without fear; shoot them where they stood; tear their houses down; carry off their women and children away; stone their father if he obstinately resisted everything they wanted…..And then come back while these poor women and children were still safe among friends and families – cooking supper for them – bringing wood for their fires so that they could rest safe at night – taking care not even to molest any cattle belonging to these Indians when they came home tired…and you call this good behavior?”[1]Derry went onTo say: "It would appear our fathers did exactly what God commanded them.....No soldier should ever use force against an unarmed civilian unless absolutely necessary." .................................................................................. By 1860 almost everyone living east of Weber Dam had left due largely to new irrigation projects begun by Abraham Lincoln's administration ...................................................................................On January 24 th 1865 General Order No 12″ read: "All persons found hereabouts must retire immediately upon hearing this order" The order stated clearly that anyone remaining would be subject to arrest ..............................Many residents chose exile instead including Joseph Smith Jr., founder Mormonism
