Grant during his final executive order on March 6, 1851—just three months after Fort Bridger had been destroyed by fire at its original site near present-day Provo Canyon. In October 1861 LDS church apostle Lorenzo Snow organized a special session of wards across Nevada Valley to set up headquarters for missionaries at Winter Quarters (later Black Mesa), which included Salt Lake City proper within boundaries established by apostles Ronald Hyrum Smith and David Oates some time earlier while they were preceptors at Kirtland Academy near Independence Rock; these same boundaries have been followed ever since as part of LDS territorial organization patterns worldwide.
