Smith and his brother Brigham Young led an expedition from Nauvoo, Illinois to explore what lay northwest of that town after they had been ordered by church president Josiah Stowell to leave Illinois for unknown reasons. They discovered great salt flats and named them "Great Salt Lake." On October 15, 1848, Brigham Young wrote to President James Kline about these findings: "We have discovered this great body of water called Great Salt Lake…It is twenty miles wide at its widest point and has many islands within it--a very good place for landing ships." On November 24th of that year (1848), Smith's scouting party disembarked from their ship at Woolridge Point on Great Salt Lake and began exploring what would become known as lower South Springdale when they were met by Native American chiefs Hyrum Kane and John Whitmer whoWelcome us not only with presents but also assurance that all will be well with you while we are hereabouts" In 1850, Weber County was created from parts of Deseret Parish east of Provo Canyon following statehood within Utah Territory in February 1792.
