Roy, Utah is a city in Ogden County, Utah, United States. The population was 487 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Roy area began as a small ranch named "Roy" on October 10, 1907 when residents of nearby Saint George drove out prospectors who had discovered gold and silver in the region. The first post office was established in Roy on March 14, 1908 and became known as "Ogden". A school was built there in 1909 and it served students until 1963 when the city took over responsibility for it. In that year, a new high school (later renamed Great Western High School) was built adjacent to the old school across from Main Street and it remains today one of America's leading public schools. One of the most important events in Roy's early history occurred during World War I when local farmers grew crops for food supplies for troops stationed overseas. This production led to increased business for local stores which helped support growth after the war ended. In 1951, Roy became home to Mayor Orville Hildebrandt when he won election as mayor by running unopposed despite being blacklisted by Republicans due to his earlier participation in sit-ins at segregated lunch counters during the 1960s civil rights movement. His tenure included two terms as mayor with no more than three months' notice before an election; he retired after serving six years due to health issues including leukemia but kept office through various court challenges brought against him by opponents alleging voter fraud (he lost all court challenges). After Hildebrandt's death on November 12, 1981, another blackocrat—Edmund Jaffe—was elected mayor with over 60% of the vote following a runoff against incumbent Verna McGee because no other candidates received more than 50% ofthe votes cast. Jaffe served two terms before retiring effective January 1, 1993 due to age or illness; he was succeeded by his wife Sandy Jaffe who also held office for two terms before becoming executive director of the Utah Education Association (UEA). On November 6th 2007 Mayor Sandy Jaffe announced her candidacy for re-election against fellow UEA Executive Director Greg Hughes but failed to win majority support within her own party so she withdrew from runoffs set up specifically for her benefit; she then endorsed Republican candidate Doug Roby instead. On January 3rd 2009 she announced her candidacy again but again failed to win majority support within her own party so she withdrew from runoffs set up specifically for her benefit; she then endorsed Republican candidate Mitt Romney instead. She has since decided not pursue any further political aspirations.
