Roy, Utah, is a small town in Carbon County, Utah. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. Roy was founded by pioneers in 1878 and named for Roy J. Cook, an early settler. The first school in Roy was built in 1879. In 1902, the town became a city and it has since grown to become one of the most important commercial and agricultural communities in Carbon County. The history of Roy begins with its founding by pioneers on November 3, 1878. At that time, it consisted of only a few homes and a store. By 1880, the town had acquired a post office and three stores. A year later, it had four hotels and two churches. By 1903, when Roy became a city under statehood statutes passed that year by Congress,[1] the population had reached 2,500 inhabitants.[2] Roy prospered during its years as a city due to its location at the heart of carbon county's agriculture industry[3] and its status as an important transportation hub for goods moving between Carbon County's farms and Steel Canyon mining operations located near what is now Park City.[4][5] It also enjoyed high rankings for education thanks to its several well-funded schools operated by local districts such as Carbon Valley School District No.. 1A (now part of Cache Valley School District), which serves students fromeast central Carbon County; John Day School District No.#2A (now part of North Logan School District);[6][7][8] Ashtabula Catholic Schools; Our Lady Of Assisi Parish Primary & Intermediate School; Stonington Heights Elementary [9]; West Jordan Middle School;[10][11] McCook High School;Cache Valley Elementary – Stonington Heights Intermediate[12]; Cache Valley Middle School – McCook High school; Cache Valley Senior High School (now Park City SeniorHigh). In addition to these public schools,[13][14][15] there were also private schools including Our Lady Of Assisi Roman Catholic Church (#1) founded in 1901 which still operates today,[16],[17],[18],[19]. In 1984,[20], Roy experienced another significant milestone when it became home to both Brigham Young University–Hawaii's Marriott College Preparatory Academy (later Marriott College Prep) and Utah State Polytechnic Institute–Carbon Springs campus—the first university level institution ever established outside of Salt Lake City proper.[21](*)
