The original town had only 10 houses and no schools so children were sent to nearby Brigham Young Academy for education until 1897 when Roy Elementary School opened. The school closed in 1966 but reopened as an elementary school in 2002 following renovations and additions including new classrooms, a gymnasium and a media center. In 1908, Roy incorporated as a city under the name "Roy." In 1912 it changed its name to "Provo" after Provo City Limits were drawn up which cut off most of what is now Kane County fromRoy. The company town ordinance stated that: “Provo shall hereafter be called by its present name or any other name which may be chosen by said corporation….No citizen thereof shall change his residence without express consent of said corporation” In 1978, Provo voters passed an ordinance changing their city limits to encompass all of Kane County including Roy and giving residents there the right to vote on annexation into either Provo or Orem respectively if they desired it In 1984, Roy annexed into Orem with full voting rights while provoing continued to have autonomy within Orem society Today, many residents still reside in Roy despite having annexed into larger cities such as Provo and Orem
