Roy, Utah is a small town in Kane County, Utah. It was settled in 1875 and named after Roy, an early settler. The first post office was established in Roy in 1876. A justice of the peace office was established in Roy in 1907 and the first city council was formed in Roy in 1912. The population of Roy increased from 2 to 30 during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location on the Wasatch Front Railroad between Ogden and Salt Lake City. In 1940, Roy had a population of 154 and by 1980 it had decreased to 54 because of falling oil prices and other economic problems. However, the population has since grown again due to new housing developments adjacent to the town center. Roy's history can be traced back to 1875 when three men – John Jansson, Amos Hansen, and Lars Christensen – erected a log cabin near present-day North Temple Creek on what is now known as State Route 691 (now US 421). Jansson became president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) here in 1902; Hansen served as clerk for several years; Christensen led local missionary efforts until his death in 1915; while living here he founded a school that later became Brigham Young University–Hawaii (BYU). In 1912, two more settlers arrived: George Wittell and his wife Ruth Kappenwetter Sorenson. They built a small home east of town on land that currently includes parts of Center Street and First Avenue SW. Wittell also operated a grocery store located east side Main Street between Third Avenue NW and Seventh Avenue NW from 1912 through 1916 when he moved west to Ogden where he continued running the business until his death four years later at age 81 years old. By 1920, there were six residents residing within the limits of present-day Roy: five farmers with their families plus Wittell’s widow who lived on East Main Street just south-east of where Center Street meets First Avenue SW today; one gasoline station operated by Prentice Ellerberger across First Avenue SW from where Second avenue NE intersects Main Street today; one hotel open 24/7 by Harry Laddi which occupied part or all of Third AveSW between Seventh AveNW corner Sixth AveNW from 1918 through 1935 while Laddi ran it as an ice cream parlor collectively with friends Clifton Witherspoon (1918-1920), William Halsey (1920-1925), Merrill Sweeting (1925-1945), Everett Wilkinson (1945) all natives or residents thereof at some point during their respective careers hereininbefore set forth hereinbefore mentioned The commercial interests surrounding these early businesses generated traffic that supported local pastors such as Orson Hyde services at South Jordan Chapel starting Monday evenings beginning July 7th 1870 continue untill October 1865 Reverend Hyde officiated over th church members & family sepoys stationed around this place . . .& weekly preaching privileges were given upon request Revd Orson Hyde Oct 5 1870 thru Nov 3 1865" Merrill Sweeting started working for Prentice Ellerberger at about age 12 helping him operate an ice cream parlor next door to Hyde's restaurant starting December 1st 1925 He retired Dec 31st 1945 but continued working part time into 1946 serving customers until then In Sept 1946 I closed my store went into storage inventory & used it up Oct 9 1946 so I could get married I got out Feb 3 1947 Villa ranchera opened Feb 20th 1947 very close thereto
Roy, Utah was founded on Feb. 15, 1847 by Mormon pioneers. The town was named for Roy J. Hayden, one of the original settlers in the area. In 1858, Roy became a county seat and has remained that way since.
