Riverton is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 1,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo-Orem, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area. Riverton was founded in 1873 by John T. Sorenson and his family as a trading post on the Wasatch Range. The post office was established in 1875 and remained open until it closed in 1922. In 1938, Riverton became an incorporated town and has since grown to include much of northeastern Utah along with parts of southern Idaho and Nevada. The first settler in what is now Riverton was John Totten who arrived there from Illinois on October 10th, 1872. He built a log cabin on the east side of US Route 12 about one mile south of present day Keystone Lake Road. A year later he erected another cabin about four miles northwest of today's town limits on the west side of US Route 12 between Cedar Creek and Springdale Roads. By 1880, settlers had started arriving from eastern Utah County including Cedar City (now Provo), Eagle City (later Tooele), Logan City (later Ogden), West Jordan, Sandyerville, Millcreek Valley and many others which were platted during that decade or so following international gold rushes that commenced in Black Hawk country near Kearney in 1860 et al In 1876 Colonel George Smith organized what would become known as the Deseret News Company with land holdings acquisition beginning January 6th that year northward from Salt Lake City via Cache Valley westward to Beaver Dale Fork where they reached the Wasatch MountainsPeninsulaouestofUtahandnorthwesttoCacheValleywhere they acquired additional land extending their holdings up to Bearsville Creek near North Little America National Monument
The first white settlers in Riverton were Hugh Nibley and his brother-in-law, David Wilcox. It was on July 7, 1847 that they started the town of Riverton off of the Utah Trail. The Nibleys had been following the trail when they came across a group of Paiute Indians playing around a fire. They decided to move into what is now Riverton and called it Fort Nibley after their leader. The first house in Riverton was built by Hugh Nibley and his wife, Eliza. In 1868, Brigham Young decided to establish himself as the new Governor of Utah Territory. He chose Riverton as the site for his new capital because it had plenty of water resources and would be easy to control from there. In 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant approved construction of the Salt Lake City Temple atRiverton and named it in honor of Young. Today, Fort Nibley is home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and is also used for cultural events such as concerts and professional wrestling matches.
