Mormon pioneers began arriving in significant numbers starting around 1882; some drove wagons carrying goods upriver past present day downtown Riverton towards Salt Lake City*. One particularly large wagon train arrived atMillcreek Ferry Landing near today's Temple Square on January 24th*, eighteen days before Nauvoo†s fall* In 1886*, James Waddell erected his first cotton gin brick structure along side current day Millcreek Ferry Landing* . Cotton ginning became an important industry during this time as it provided employment for many local men* . Over time this industry grew very popular among developers throughout Utah County because it allowed them to cheaply produce textiles using expensive machinery*. By 1890+, mills had been erected at Millcreek Ferry Landing*, Kearny Bridge Crossing*, Hite Bridge Crossing*, Springdale Crossing (*), Garnett Crossing (*), Aspen Ridge crossing(*), Cache Valley crossing(*), Westgate crossing(*), Green Hills crossing(**) etc.* With increased production came increased demand for labor so workers were often taken from surrounding counties such as Weber * [*], Carbon * [*], Davis * [*], Cedar City ** [*], Eagle Mountain ****** [*] *. Families also started moving outposts closer to city limits because they could get better paying jobs there *.
