In 1896, Isaac Sorenson moved from Winter Quarters, Nebraska to Riverton and opened a grocery store and post office there. A year later he sold his business to George W Thomas for $2,000 cash. Thomas ran the store until it closed in 1903 when he became president of Weber State College (now UT). In 1907, Fenton Costerman bought the store from Thomas and reopened it as a hotel/motel which he operated until 1951. In 1936, Glen Stafford bought land adjacent to UT's Carbondale campus for development into what would become Riverton Village; however no buildings were ever erected due to World War II shortages of concrete and other materials necessary for construction projects at that time. In 1958, UT purchased an acreage east of Main Street from Fenton Costerman for $5,000 which would become Rivers Edge Park; this area served as both an athletic field and cultural center for students at UT during its early years while Carbondale was being built out by professors and students themselves instead of using government dollars or donations from wealthy individuals or families like those behind Carbondale's initial development plan! At present-day Rivers Edge Park spans almost two blocks with more than 20 structures including several homes dating back to around 1900-2000 making it one of the oldest park complexes still extant on university property!
