Riverton is a city in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 10,652 at the 2010 census. Riverton is located in the Great Salt Lake Valley and straddles both banks of the river which flows through it. It began as an agricultural center with some families farming on high ground overlooking the river and others growing crops near the water's edge. The first post office was established in 1881, and by 1912 there were 11 businesses in town. In 1926, the first town meeting was held in what is now downtown Riverton and a new school was built that year.In 1941, during World War II, Riverton became one of six communities within 100 miles of Salt Lake City to take part in the Combat Air Transport Service program which supplied military aircraft to other cities throughout Utah and Nevada.The community continued to grow until 1951 when it had 9 businesses and over 20 residents when its boundaries were changed to encompass all of Kane County except for Cedar City which remained a separate municipality until 1957
Riverton is a small town in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 539 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Provo–Orem, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. Riverton is located on the west bank of the Great Salt Lake and is east of the Wasatch Mountains. The town was founded in 1847 by Captain John Dyer as a trading post on the Green River. In 1851, it became a city and was named for its founder, James Riverton. The first mayor of Riverton was Brigham Young. The city limits were expanded to include present-day Springdale in 1912 and Park City in 1916. In 1984, two pipelines carrying water from Ogden to Stansbury were destroyed when an earthquake measuring 7.8 killed six people and injured more than 150 others nearriverton Dam; this event made riverton one of the most seismically active towns in Utah. In 2006-2007, riverTON constructed a new $5 million wastewater treatment plant that replaced an older plant that had been inadequate for recent growth rates within the community and adjacent areas such as Springdale and Park City

The town gradually grew and developed until it became an important commercial center in Iron County and boasted a population of over 10,000 by the early 21st century. Riverton is home to several churches and schools, as well as a small shopping mall. The first people to live in Riverton were Mormons who fled from Nauvoo, Illinois after the Mormon Extermination Act was passed there in 1846. They built their own cabin and named it "Riverton." In 1870 they started building what would become Riverton's first schoolhouse--a log cabin that still stands today. Riverton also began developing into a busy community with stores, restaurants, hotels, and other businesses. By 1912 Riverton had outgrown its original boundaries and became an incorporated city under the name "Riverton." In 1974 (just two years after Utah's statehood), Riverton merged with neighboring town Herriman to form one large municipality known as "Iron County." This merger allowed for more economic development within Iron County while preserving separate municipal identities for each town. Today both towns maintain their separate identities but are still very close to one another geographically and culturally. 3 different branches of LDS church have been located here since earliest days: stake president’s office (1869-1971), temple builder (1901-2006), riverTON ward president’s office (2002-present).
