The Riverton Massacre took place on October 16, 1876, when a group of Mormons branded and shot twelve men, women and children who had surrendered to the Union army at Fort Bridger in what is now Utah. The massacre was one of the deadliest episodes in American history. The town of Riverton was founded by pioneers in 1868 on the edge of present-day Salt Lake City. At that time, it was one of the most isolated communities in Utah. As railroads arrived in the 1870s and 1880s, settlers began moving into Riverton from all over Utah and even from Arizona. In 1876, Mormon leader Brigham Young ordered his followers to march to Fort Bridger east of Salt Lake City to surrender their arms and be baptized into the LDS church. When they reached the fort, they were brandished with hot irons until they disperse onto a sandbank below. From there, they were shot by order of Young while scrambling for cover. Twelve people died as a result—seven men (including three infants) killed outright from being burned alive as they tried to flee; four women and two young children were also killed before collapsing from lack of food or water after being captured; two others were wounded but survived. In 1865–67 a group of Mormon refugees numbering 116 had crossed overland from Lago Vista California through Mexico Territory into Utah Territory under an agreement between Mormon leaders David O’Connor and Santa Clara County Sheriff John Cavanagh; however that group never confronted federal troops face-to-face. When news arrived at Fort Bridger about the planned listless surrendering party some miles away, Captain Edward Meeks commanding Company A United States Volunteers called out his unit's volunteers for duty “against any other enemies within our limits” instead he learned that only Mormons among those marching would be massacred – he therefore ordered his companies back insideFort Bridger whereupon Captains Macklinore & Bowers with Companies F & G volunteered instead Millenial Star. No word reached Brigade headquarters until after dark when Acting Brigadier General George Custer rode up on horseback hearing about what was happening:

Custer said “What sort of treatment am I going to receive?” He then looked around at these dismounted troopers without uniforms or anything else covering them except their pistols which lay upon the ground near him.

At this point 4 companies plus 1 battalion outslaughtered 350+ unarmed Mormons giving rise to charges leveled against Lt Col George Armstrong Custer Jr., MajGen Wilford Woodruff& Col Logan UT for failing properly investigate>< ref >Utah Historical Quarterly.

The town of Riverton was founded in 1847 by John C. Fremont and his family. The population of Riverton grew quickly, and in 1852 it became the county seat for Grand County. In 1861, the Union Army attacked and destroyed the fort at Fort Bridger, which caused a large exodus of settlers from Riverton. By 1865, the town had shrunk to just over a hundred people. The last white settler left Riverton in 1936.
