Riverton is a city in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 15,675 at the 2010 census. Riverton is the smallest of the five cities in Weber County and one of only two rural communities in the county. It is bordered by Cedar City to the east, Logan to the west and south, and Spanish Fork to the north. The town was founded in 1885 by mechanics working for The Salt Lake Mining Company. It became a town on December 1, 1902 when it was merged with Cedar City. In 1907 it changed its name to Riverton after Wyoming's river valleys were named after English towns that had similar names: Trenton (New Jersey), Donington (UK), Wickenburg (Arizona Territory), etc.). The first post office in Riverton opened on July 8, 1885; it closed on October 3, 1886 due to low mail volume caused by gold rush fever which had swept through western Utah during that year. In 1915–16 there was an attempt by nearby Logan to annex Riverton as its own town because of fears that Cedar City would become too large and out-of-the-way for Logan's small population; however this failed because of strong opposition from residents of both towns who felt they were already well served by their respective local governments. In 1951 Riverton incorporated as a city under state law following a referendum held within the limits of both towns; at that time only Cedar City and Logan were fully independent municipalities within Weber County save for Cane Ridge which self-identified as a township but also filed incorporation papers with Weber County authorities). The first settler in Riverton was George A Smith who arrived on July 10th, 1887 This small settlement was located near present day Layton on the banks of the Clearwater River. In 1890, after John Dibble's family refused to leave their land near Cedar City next to Cedar Mesa Ski Resort, George A Smith donated 640 acres (248 hectares) of his property ceded by his father-in-law Jacob Wetherbee to build a community here which would be called "Riverton" after the river that ran through it. initial plans called for 8 houses with 30 outbuildings but this evolved into a town with over 20 buildings including a jail and school house which were built between 1888 and 1897 whenriverton became an incorporated village under territorial law Riverton had its own post office from 1907 until 1959 when it joined the larger Ogden-Clearfield metropolitan statistical area. Today, there are numerous businesses and agencies within RiverTON including; Community Credit Union (1910), American West Bankers National Bank (1918), First Interstate Bancorp (1983), Rio Grande Medical Center (1996), Parkview Elementary School & Middle School (1998 -Present), Quality Life Insurance Co., Incorporated ('QLI') ('1990'), Southern Utah University ('SUU' or 'UTA') '(2002 - Present) as well as many others!
