Today, most of the original Mormon settlers have moved away, but there are still a few people living in Riverton who are descendants of those early settlers. The town has a rich history that includes being one of the first places in Utah to be bom with electricity and having its own railroad station. Today, Riverton is home to a variety of businesses including several schools and two hospitals as well as a number of churches and other religious organizations. Riverton is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,820 at the 2010 census. Riverton was founded in 1861 by wagon train drivers and their families fleeing the American Civil War. The townsite hereabouts was luckier than most as it lay just east of the Salt Lake Valley on the Great Salt Lake Fault line. It wasn't until 1865 when Brigham Young proclaimed that Utah would be a state and Riverton became one of its first (and only) settlements. In 1868, Mormon missionaries arrived in what is now Riverton to proselytize for the church. By 1870,riverton had 10 residents and two businesses; agriculture dominated the local economy then but has since declined due to lack of growth or mining opportunities on nearby hillsides. However, over time there have been sporadic efforts by locals to revive river tonliness including starting a small grocery store in 1990 which closed in 2006 and several attempts at reviving an agricultural fair each year since 2007
Riverton was founded in 1847 on the Great Salt Lake. The town developed as a trading post and railroad stop on the route between St. George, Utah, and Ogden. In 1863, Riverton became the capital of Utah Territory. It was renamed Salt Lake City in 1896.
