Riverton is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Riverton is located on the banks of the Green River south of Ogden and east of Provo. It was founded in 1847 by Jedediah Smith and others as a trading post on the Green River. The first store in Riverton was built by John Fenton in 1852. In 1875, the town was renamed after George W. Dixon, an early settler and politician who served as mayor of Salt Lake City from 1893 to 1895 and as a member of the Utah Territorial Legislature from 1901 to 1903. In 1911, Southwestern Electric Railway extended its line through Riverton, becoming one of the first companies to build electric lines in Utah. The company built a depot and other associated structures in riverfront parkland near First Congregational Church before moving its operations to San Lorenzo Avenue north of downtown on May 10, 1912. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park was designated withinriverton limits on November 16, 1918; it became part of National Park Service jurisdiction upon creation of that agency on February 2, 1949.

Riverton is a small town in Utah, located about 15 miles south of Provo. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Riverton is part of the Provo-Orem metropolitan area. It was founded in 1847 by Mormons who fled Brigham Young's polygamy trial in England. The first post office was established in 1853, and the name for the town came from a stream that flowed through it. The original land around Riverton was mostly sagebrush and dry creek beds. Over time, however, farming began to take hold, and today Riverton stands as one of the most agricultural communities in Utah. Many of the buildings that remain from early days are still used today such as the Post Office Building which has been used since 1893 and also houses a restaurant called "The Grapes" which opened its doors in 1943. One of Riverton's most notable residents was Orval Faison who played an important role in local politics for many years before he died in 2006 at age 97. Faison was born on July 4th, 1915, just north of Riverton on what is now known as Farmington Hills Road. After graduating from Brigham Young University with a degree in business administration (1939), Faison served as president and CEO of two prominent Utah banks before coming to Riverton to start his own bank Hereford & Son limited partnership (now First American Bank). He served as mayor from 1974 until his death two years later after having spent almost sixty years living within walking distance of his home; he even helped lay out streets near his house! During his tenure as mayor, Rivertontown Park became one of Utah’s largest historic districts; faison helped make it happen! His passion for design led him to found numerous businesses including Loews Cedar Terrace Resort & Spa (later Loews Canyonlands Resort) and Loews Regency Village Hotel; both properties are still active today with excellent visitor experiences! In 2002 he spearheaded efforts to bring BYU basketball back to Riverton after 25 years away; during their return trip to riverTONTON they set an NCAA record for attendance! In 2007 he co-founded The Orchard - an award-winning nonprofit arts organization - which provides creative programming opportunities leading up to major events at nearby venues like Town Hall Theater and Palace Theatre including Jazz At The Palace Nightclub/L'Orchestra de Paris nightlife event series nights only!
Riverton was founded in 1847 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition as a station on the Snake River. The town was named for General James Riverton, who led the expedition. In 1881, it became a city and was renamed after President George Washington.
