The first permanent settler in Riverton was Lorenzo Price, who arrived in 1847. He and his family were the nucleus of the community that would grow to over 1,200 people. The Price homestead was located on the east side of the river, close to present-day State Route 435. In 1851, Isaac Sayers founded a small town just downstream from Riverton on the Colorado River. Sayers named his new settlement after himself – Salt Lake City – in an act of self-promotion. However, little progress was made until 1862 when Brigham Young organized an expedition to find a land route between Utah and California. On July 24th, Young sent out party four riders commanded by Captain John C. Fremont to explore what lay beyond the Great Salt Lake Valley. One day after reachingriver's mouth they returned without finding any suitable land for building a future town. In October 1862, Brigham Young ordered all residents of Salt Lake City except for about seventyfive men (the "inhabitants" or "settlers") to move into newly created East Utah Delivery Station on what is now State Route 435 north of downtown Riverton
