In 1907 Brigham Young University (BYU) moved its main campus to Riverton from Provo and opened an agricultural school there. In 1923 BYU built a new main campus east of Riverton across the Sevier from Lighthouse Pointe which remains today one of BYU's largest campuses. It is also home to several other academic institutions including Utah State University (USU), Utah Valley University (UVUL), Parkland College, and Red Mesa Community College. Riverton's economy revolves around agriculture with some manufacturing activities also present such as carpentry and textiles however most jobs are related to farming or ranching activities such as production of livestock or crops

In 1847, the first Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Riverton. The town was named for Brigham Young and it was founded on the banks of the Colorado River. By 1849, Utah had been purchased from Mexico by Brigham Young and his followers. The first courthouse was built in Riverton in 1850. In 1865, a railroad station was built in Riverton and it became a center for trade with neighboring Salt Lake City. In 1902, the town name was changed to Hurricane because of the large hurricane that struck Utah that year.
