Smith took an opportunity to go into Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) alone to find some land where he could establish a Mormon colony without having to worry about being raided by the military or other Indians because it was still considered part of Mexican territory at that time. When he returned to Riverton he found that some members of his brethren had already erected homes and started trading goods with local Native Americans who were also living in the area; this situation continued until 1902 when President Brigham Young ordered all Mormons out of Indian Territory due to increasing tensions between America's two countries over slavery issues which were then becoming more open nationally across America as well as around the world despite efforts by American presidents like James K Polk (1841-45) not to recognize any international slave trade going on while Europe was still primarily involved in slaves buying and selling Africans). In 1847, the first Latter-day Saint settlements in what is now Riverton were established. The town was named for Joseph Smith, Jr., who led the early church movement to Utah. By 1858, the population of Riverton had grown to about 100 people and it was incorporated as a town on May 10, 1858. The first post office in Riverton wasestablished on July 16, 1861. The current post office building was built in 1916 and has been used by the Town Council since that time. Riverton is home to several businesses including Moroni's Store which serves as a local grocery store; the Kirtland temple is also located in Riverton; and West Jordan Mill which produces flour, wheat and other agricultural products.
