In 1852, Brigham Young organized the Latter-day Saints and began building their colony at Cedar City south of today's Riverton. That same year, they moved 6 families from Provo to live in what would become Riverton. The first post office was established here in 1853. In 1865, Cedar City beganto becoming the county seat after Bear Ears County was created from parts of Utah Territory lands acquired by Congress during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). Today's downtown area was developed as a shopping mall around 1970 when Valley Shopping Center opened adjacent to Interstate 15 and Utah State Route 128/US Highway 191 interchange just southwest of center
