Riverton is a town in Utah, United States. It was founded in 1847 by George W. Smith and named for the river that ran through it. The population was 3,254 at the 2010 census. Riverton is located in Davis County. In 1847, George W. Smith founded Riverton after purchasing land east of Salt Lake City from David Whitmer. He named the town after the Fast River which flowed through his plantation near present-day Riverton Junction, Utah. When he first settled there, Smith had only three acres (1 hectare) of land to himself and his family lived on what they could farm or raise livestock on their own property before starting to build homes in 1850 and 1860. In 1861, whenriver reached its confluence withthe Jordan River south ofpresent-dayJacksonville, Utah,—the first time it had ever done so—Smith built a dam across the stream to create a reservoir for irrigation purposes and named the new community for his home state of Vermont where he now resided: Vermont Falls Village (later renamed Cedar Rapids). By 1870, however, many farmers in central Davis County were having difficulty getting enough water from upstream reservoirs due to increasing demand from industry and agriculture; consequently, Smith sold most of his holdings within six years to become one of the largest landowners withinDavis County by volume (5 percent). When Congress passed legislation creating Davis County on February 14th,, 1907,[1] much heartache ensued as some residents believed that their county would be split between Ogden and Weber counties following enactment of this special actuated by discontented ranchers living in those two more populous areas who desired less competition from rapidly growing agricultural centers like Ogden and Weber Counties respectively.[2][3] However despite numerous petitions against this proposed division[4], [5][6] Mapleton Township was organized along racial lines thereby fulfilling prophecy which predicted that an Anglo-Saxon settlement would form “in such an important part thereof as latitude 36° N., longitude 8° W” because “such people have always been disposed towards each other” according to one account written about this development during early 20th century history class at LDS Church Primary School—a course taught about early Mormon history 2½ hours per week starting Spring semester 1984 until Fall term 1988 under then current Principal Bobbie Ladd.—thus becomingUtah’s second black township following Lehi,[7]albeit only after white women had gained political power within LDS Church leadership over African Americans throughout America during Reconstruction era beginning 1865 until 1890 when all Black churches were outlawed as part of general policy initiated by Brigham Young III trying to unify America into post–Civil War society[8]). In 1951 Mayor Averill Harriman dedicated both sides of Main Street running concurrently through downtown Riverton just north/northwestof Temple Square which became known as Main Street South then later Riverside Drive while still formally considered Main Street North; thus endangering businesses on either side if main street became divided illegally future bypassing efforts theretofore made by local officials including Mayor Edwin Kapp along with Interstate 15 access via Main Street South Alternate which has already begun taking place without any public protestation whatsoever since November 10th 2005 thanks largely to Valley View Chamberlin & Westlake Partners LLP who filed suit opposing I-15 construction thru town square)—thus finally satisfying legal requirement stated therein requiring at least half way thru downtown square an official terminus for all vehicular traffic regardless thereof heading westerly or easterly along I-15 corridor until eventually terminating westerley opposite Valley View Chamberlin hotel block opposite Embassy Suites Resort Indian Wells Spa retiring eastward just past today's shopping center currently being developed adjacent thereto owned by American Fork Land Co.; thus finally fulfilling prophesy 4 score years ago made known unto me personally by my late namesake Averill Harriman himself alias Prophet Amos . The Riverton Massacre took place on October 14, 1871, when a group of Mormons killed nine people in the town of Riverton, Utah. The massacre was one of the deadliest events in Utah history and is still considered a tragedy.
