Riverton, Utah is a town in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 2,566 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Logan–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1847 by John Sutter and named for him and his brother-in-law Uriah Hill. Riverton post office opened in 1850 and remained open until 1907. The first school in Riverton was built on a farm east of the present day courthouse square. A second school was built on a farm west of the square in 1852. The first mill in Riverton was built in 1861 by James Averill and remain active to this day as an agricultural production center with a large corn elevator and several other businesses including two grocery stores, four banks (the Citizens National Bank being one of them), two schools, three churches (including one Methodist), utility services such as water service and streetlights, numerous homes that still stand today along with many museum pieces from pioneer days like saddles used by saddlemakers, harnesses used by farmers etc., etc., making it an interesting place to visit even today. The early residents were farmers who grew wheat, barley, oats and hay; later they diversified into cattle/sheep farming and dairy operations; eventually their economy shifted towardsTourism which has seen some major changes over time: In the early 1900s riverboats stopped navigation near our community because it offered too much temptation for theft by robbers called "the blacklegs." However tourism became more important than ever after the opening up of eastern Utah to non- Mormon settlers following World War II - so much so that various businesses sprang up around downtownRiverton just to accommodate all those visitors! One such business is now known as "The Kiosk", which has been open since 1971 when it replaced an old Ford dealership across from downtown which had closed down due to vandalism! Today Riverton is home to both a high school (Riverton East) with its own gymnasium/athletic complex as well as several small local libraries plus historic buildings like the original courthouse square mentioned earlier - making it not only an interesting place to live but also very popular tourist destination for locals and visitors alike!

The first Europeans to arrive in the area were Mormon pioneers in 1847. The river valley was discovered by a team of Mormon Scouts while on a scouting trip east of Salt Lake City. The explorers named the area "Riverton" after their leader, Brigham Young.
