Upon his appointment, Whitmer ordered that all church property be sold and used to build an early LDS temple on Temple Square—the first ever constructed in America. During World War II, Provo played host to many military installations including Tactical Air Command's 9th Air Force Station located adjacent to Maurer Park which was home to Boeing Aircraft Company’s Stearman TB-17 Flying Fortress bomber squadron until it was moved across campus during the war years into Wright-Patterson AFB east of Dayton OH. The population growth associated with redirection from agriculture towards service businesses caused single family homes – once predominant within town limits – gradually replaced multi-family dwellings since about 1970; however some older structures still remain vacant or are used for commercial purposes such as a tire store on First Avenue South facing I-15 southbound between Center Street and North Main Street near BYU University Campus
