As president of Nauvoo Academy (later known as Brigham Young University), which he founded in 1849–50, Taylor also developed what would soon be called Utah's educational system;[1] he also served as governor of Deseret County from 1850 to1857.[2] In 1862, after years of planning by Joseph Smith and other key members of The First Family,[3] Brigham Young organized what would become The LDS Church proper with the Restoration Theory—a reinterpretationof Mormonism's foundational scripture that emphasized restoration via direct communication with God rather than apostles or prophets like those who had preceded them.—see: brigham young Papers vol 1 p 244-245
Provo, Utah was founded on December 15, 1896 by Brigham Young and his men while they were on their way to the Salt Lake Valley. The city was named in honor of Provo's founder. In 1976, Provo became the first city in Utah to become a state capital.
