When it was first recommended to build a scopes in 1885, few people knew about the vast desert landscape that lay to the east of them. The Pleasant Grove rifle range, located on what is now 95th Street in Pleasant Grove, Utah, had been opened in 1879 and quickly became one of the most popular shooting ranges in the area. In 1886, George Washington Richards lithographed his "The Rifleman's Bible," which included a map of America with distances between gunpowder plants and hunting areas marked. By 1914, it was estimated that around 100 different types of scopes were being used at this range. Many of these later models were designed by JH Richardson specifically for use at the rifle range. In 1915, after World War I ended and new restrictions were placed on firearms ownership due to new regulations following the assassination of President Woodrow Wilson, John H Richardson decided to start production of scope mounts for rifles again. His design featured Surefire rings as either Horizontal or Vertical slits on each side of the mount so that adjustment could be done without having to remove or disassemble your rifle. These mounts would continue to be produced through version 30 (1930) and into today's model years (1980-2015). Because these mounts are so important in firearm function and optics history, they have been preserved and studied by those who love Shooting sports!
