The first settlement in Pleasant Grove was established in 1873 by pioneers John and Emma Green. They named their new town after thepleasant grove near their home in Illinois where they had been house-hunting. The townsite was laid out in 1875 by George Wickersham and Jesse Oates. In 1907, Pleasant Grove incorporated as a village. On January 14, 1959, it became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and nine trustees elected by residents at large instead of from single wards like most villages do. On November 3, 1984, Pleasant Grove voted to become an unincorporated community once again under its own governance with a Mayor and five trustees appointed by the Town Council rather than elected at large like Village members are now granted voting power for (although this may change with future annexation requests). Pleasant Grove has several churches including Messiah Lutheran Church which built the first post office here on Main Street in 1870 and still operates today as one of Utah's largest congregations; First Congregational Methodist church; Presbyterian church; Latter Day Saints (Mormon) temple; Sweetwater Baptist Church & Garden Center; Armstrong Amusement Park & Waterpark - all operated as businesses until 2009 when they were combined into one park operating company called "Armstrong Park" which includes both Armstrong Amusement Park & Waterpark as well as two other parks located adjacent to each other across Main Street - Armandale Park and Highland Park - these four parks together have over 400 acres of amusement park rides/attractions! There are also several restaurants and small shops located throughout Pleasant Grove including many that serve local cuisine such as Italian restaurant "Ristorante Bianco"; Chinese restaurant "Tian Bao"; Vietnamese restaurant "New World Pho"; bakery "Cafeteria Americana", grocery store "Grocery Outlet", convenience store "(Giant Eagle), Dry Goods Store "(Kroger)". In 1971, when Salt Lake City became an independent city, Pleasant Grove lost much of its significance within Mormonism due to its rural location and lack of industry. However, it has since regained some popularity among Mormons as a place where they can pilgrimage or live for brief periods during valley visits before returning home.
