The Pleasant Grove Massacre occurred on July 24, 1879, when a group of Mormon militiamen killed 27 unarmed Paiute Indians in the Utah Valley. The Mormons claimed that the Indians were attacking their livestock and had attacked a white settler, James Blackston. The Paiutes argued that they were only following instructions from their Ancestors to protect their villages from white men.
