Neighboring cities are Payson to the north, Logan to the east, Cottonwood Heights to the south, Herriman to the west, St George to the north, North Ogden to the south, and Winter Quarters tothe southwest. According as per 2010 U .S . Census figures there are also settlements of Native Americans located within or near Pleasant Grove: White Mesa Navajo Nation Indian Reservation; Springdale Apache Tribe Indian Reservation; Carbon Hill Paiute Tribe reservation; Ahwatukee Nation Tribal lands; Kirtland Park Cherokee Nation National Forest lands including Butte Creek Reservoir Preserve ecosystem area which straddles border between US BLM land leased from Cherokee Nation tribal members under management by US Forest Service

In 1847, Pleasant Grove was organized as a Latter Day Saint settlement in the Weber Valley. The first Mormon pioneers arrived in what is now Pleasant Grove on April 6, 1847. The town was Named for President George A. Smith's brother-in-law and fellow apostle, Brigham Young. Smith had earlier named the valley after his mother's maiden name of "Pleasant" because she enjoyed flowers so much that he would often take her to see them in bloom. In 1850, following the death of Brigham Young, the new prophet—then known as Joseph Smith—pushed for a more centralized government in Utah and proposed that all Saints be put under one roof. He also desired to create an agricultural society where people could raise crops and sell goods from their homes. At this time, Pleasant Grove was one of only a few settlements outside of Nauvoo, Illinois with members of both the LDS Church and farmers living together side by side in harmony until 1856 when war between rival factions caused many homes to be burned down and many people to flee Nauvoo. Pleasant Grove slowly began rebuilding during the Reconstruction Era (1868-1877). Many residents returned after being allowed back into America due to Reconstruction laws which granted voting rights to African Americans and protected civil liberties such as freedom of speech and assembly while suspending slavery within specific states/ territories
