Payson, Utah is a small town located in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. The name Payson comes from the Oglala Sioux word páyōn which means "the place where I will plant my crops." The first settler in Payson was John C. Smith and his party on July 26, 1847. In 1871, George A. Smith and his family settled in what is now the town of Payson. At that time the population of Payson was just over 100 people. In 1902, William Henschel bought land in present-day Payson and began to build a new community called Prospect Hill with 60 lots. On October 1st of that year, Payson became a city after it was approved by an act of the Utah Territorial Legislature. On December 5th of that year, City fathers set up their first government with Mayor Jepson as its first head officer and Aldermen Provo and Grimes as its members. On November 25th of 1912 President Woodrow Wilson made an official visit to America at Salt Lake City's Temple Square where he delivered remarks on behalf of Utahns abroad who were protesting American intervention in World War I ( subsequently known as World War I). That same day $5 million worth of bonds were issued for development projects within 200 blocks radius around downtown Salt Lake City including Prospect Hill which had become known as Wilson Park due to its location adjacent to then President Wilson's home (Wilson House Museum today). It wasn't until 1978 when residents voted 3-2 to remove all reference to "Prospect Hill" from city ordinance because it referred only to what lay east side along State Street between First Avenue and Ninth Street; now part of University Circle! Despite this removal attempt by the citizens many reminders about Prospect Hill still remain throughout the township; both on public signs inside local businesses such as grocery stores or on large poster boards outside similar places such as universities across Kane County! kinda like graffiti but without breaking any laws ;)
