The townsite of Payson was first settled by Mormons in 1847 after they arrived from Nauvoo, Illinois. The original Mormon pioneers were led by Brigham Young and built a mills and store on the site that still stands today. They named their new settlement for Apostle Payson who had recently been called to lead the LDS Church in Nauvoo. In 1860, Jerald Andrus started his own flour mill and bakery in what is now Payson. Andrus became an important figure in early Mormon history because he developed some of the first economic policies for the church leaders in Utah Territory. He also helped to promote agriculture as a keystay of LDS society and economy. After Jerald Andrus' death in 1892, his son Omer Andrus continued family business operations until 1959 when it merged with another local grain company to form Deseret Industries Incorporated (DII). WhenDeseret Industries Incorporated went public on NASDAQ stock market on October 6th 2000 under the ticker symbol "DEI," it became one of America's largest private companies with over 370 employees including CEO Bruce Bechtel Payson was founded as Fort Bridger Station on November 24th 1862 by Captain James Wickersham during his tour through southern Utah searching for members of LDS Battalion #5 organized under Mountain Meadows Massacre survivor Lorenzo Snow along with other Latter-day Saint survivors from Joseph Smith's polygamy trials including Hyrum Smith and Emma Hale Woodruff . On January 9th 1863 Captain Wickersham reported back to headquarters at Salt Lake City that all troops had been withdrawn from this area due to lack of food supplies; only two men remaining were Captains John Coyle (at Fort Bridger) and George Atherton(at Cedar Mesa Depot). No further action was taken until February 25th when orders reached Fort Bridger that units should be sent northward towards Cedar Mesa Depot where provisions could be secured for them; however on March 1st Atherton discovered evidence that there may have been more survivors than anticipated and ordered all available forces into camp again within sight of Cedar Mesa Depot where they remained until April 12th when news reached headquarters that most likely around 150 Latter-day Saints had died at Mount Carmel massacre near here . On April 3rd Captain Wickersham recommended commanding officer Major General David Whitmer take command over all troops present southward reaching Cedar Mesa Depot before dark; Whitmer accordingly ordered march southward without further delay; however upon arrival at depot found only 7 soldiers out of 38+ garrisoned therewith no cavalry or artillery escort necessary since locomotive & wagons had already left for Provo city several days earlier westward bound . By order dated April 12th MajGen David Whitmer reorganized existing battalion into 4 regiments each commanded by Brigadier General Orson Hyde which later became known as First Iron Brigade brigades led respectively by Colonel George Armstrong Howe (2nd Brigade), Brigadier General John Gorman (3rd Brigade), Colonel Alfred Smedley Hitchcock (4th Brigade) while brigade hospitals were established at Montrose east end & Spanish Fork northwest end also receiving patients from Provo hospital east side especially Drs Temple Grandin & Dr Hiram Bingham self operated Women’s Hospital moved across street from Spanish Fork Hotel opposite Female Seminary building Hospitality buildings adjacent thereto were used by Volunteers corps ambulance service providing medical care for Union soldiers nearby during battle fought between Union Army [Cheyenne River Campaign] & ConfederateArmy near here [Battle Of Huntsville] This report created great excitement among both friends& foes alike throughout Utah Territory as many believed possible Indian resurgence resulting from large numberOf casualties suffered recent events unusual military deploymentCache Cache
