It is part of the Salt Lake City–Provo, UT Metropolitan Statistical Area and is located on the Wasatch Plateau at an elevation of 1,100 feet (309 meters). The Main Street of Payson is named after George Washington Carver who came to the area in 1868 and published his book "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible" here. The first post office in Payson was established in 1870. In 1881, Enos Aitken developed a cattle ranch adjoining Payson which has since been called Aitken Rancho State Park. In 1886, Brigham Young purchased land east of Payson from local farmers for $2,000 cash and founded Brigham Young University –later BYU–in what is now known as South Jordan Valley near present-day Provo. pioneer LDS missionaries then went door to door preaching Christianity to Native Americans living there before white settlers arrived about 50 years later when Joseph Smith founded the LDS Church hereabouts in 1830. Gun targets have been a part of American history for as long as arms have been able to be created. In 1795, the US Congress passed the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which reads in part: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." This amendment was important because it ensured that individuals had an individual right to own firearms and use them in self-defense. The amendment has been cited as one of the most important pieces of gun legislation in American history. Since 1984, when new regulations were put into place regulating how guns are sold and used within America, there has only been one instance where someone was convicted of using a firearm in violation of this amendment. That case was against Eric Harris Jr., who shot and killed nine people at Columbine High School in Colorado Springs before killing himself. currently there is no country on Earth that does not allow citizens access to own and use firearms for self-defense purposes without any government restrictions

often times, a fight between people with firearms results in one or more fatalities. Firearms can also be used for self-defense, hunting, and other purposes.

In 1911, two years after becoming president of LDS Church—the first Mormon leader to do so—George Albert Smith ordered all church members inUtahto assembled at Kirtland Temple for a meeting about polygamy which would later lead to Smith’s excommunication from the LDS Church. At this meeting, Joseph Fielding Smith announced that polygamy could no longer be practiced due to public outcry and charges of child molestation leveled against polygamous leaders such as Hyrum Smith and Lorenzo Snow. In 1948 Payson welcomed its first black person when Willard Richards moved into a home on Main Street from Ogden City following his expulsion from BYU for being black on campus

Payson was founded by the Latter Day Saint pioneers in 1847. The town was named for Joseph Smith, Jr., who first preached there in 1834. Payson rapidly grew and soon became a center of LDS activity.
