Payson, Utah is a town located in Kane County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Payson was founded in 1881 and has been primarily an agricultural community since its founding. The town is named after Payson, Arizona Territory. The first settlers to the area were Seth Cline and his family who arrived in 1881 from Illinois. They built a cabin on the east side of what is now Uinta Street in Payson. In 1888, John Wirth established a blacksmith shop and general store on Main Street which still stands today. Wirth married Elizabeth Johnson in 1888 and this became the nucleus of the local population for many years until eventually people from other parts of Kane County started arriving as well. By 1912 there were six stores in Payson with over 100 residents. Expansion into other areas began soon thereafter as ranchers turned to Payson for water supplies and land for farming purposes became available nearby due to recent volcanic activity near Bears Ears National Monument. This growth led to increased development around Main Street with more businesses opening up including two banks (the First National Bank and Citizens State Bank) as well as several churches (Methodist Episcopal Church & Presbyterian Church). In 1935 main street was renamed US-19 following its construction by the US Army Corps of Engineers along with numerous other streets throughout Kane County based on military assignments or changes in name during World War II including Ohlone Drive in Ogden, Beaumont Avenue in Provo, Herndon Boulevard near Cottonwood Heights and much later Ruby Parkway just outside of Price City proper prior to its current designation as US-19A within Area I of the Grand StaircaseEscalante National Monument
