Payson is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ogden-Clearfield County, Utah metropolitan area. The town has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was named for George Payson, an American fur trader and pioneer settler in this region. The first post office in Payson was established on February 12, 1847. In 1863 the first railroad tracks were laid through the town by the Union Pacific Railroad. By 1870 Payson had a small mill and two churches. The community rapidly grew thanks to its location near Brigham Young University (BYU) and other businesses and services available in Ogden and Clearfield Counties. In 1907 Payson became home to BYU's second football team; that year they also played their first intercollegiate game against Weber State University (WSU). In 1912 BYU basketball moved from Provo to Payson after being expelled from Brigham Young University for rules violations relating to player recruitment. In 1925 Payson annexed neighboring Sandy Valley which at that time had a population of only 350 people while nearby Cottonwood Heights had a population of 5,000+. That same year saw the founding of the local Chamber of Commerce with David Wadleigh as its first president. Many subsequent presidents have followed including Don LaFontaine who served from 1975-1977 and 1981-1983; Dick Schneider who served from 1990-1994;Gary Ratliff from 1997-1999; Norm Weinstock from 2002-2004; John Swallow from 2006 until his retirement in 2009 effective September 1st.;and current President(s) Craig Lassaerts & Scott Smith

Payson, Utah is a town located in Iron County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,577 at the 2010 census. It was founded by George Payson in 1869. The site of Payson was long known for its coal mining operations and local logging. However, it became a center for Mormon missionary activity after the LDS Church purchased land there in 1887. The first missionaries to arrive in Payson were Hugh Nibley and Willard Richards. From 1888 until 1912, Payson was home to the only cotton gin in Utah. In 1911, Brigham Young designated Payson as the location of his last remove from Salt Lake City. He died there on July 15 that year at the age of ninety-six years one month and four days. At his deathbed he directed all LDS Church activities within Iron County including Payson and Springdale (where he had been living since 1847). After Brigham Young's death, many members of the church leadership wanting to continue proselytizing outside of Salt Lake City established their headquarters in nearby Ogdenville where they continued to operate until 1920 when they relocated once again to Provo (now Provo Municipal Airport). In 1920–21 construction began on what would become BYU's original campus on former grazing land west of town limits which would eventually be developed into an urban area today with over 20 thousand residents according to 2014 estimates
