Orem is a city in Utah, United States. The population was 19,711 at the 2010 census. Orem is the county seat of Kane County. The first permanent settler in what is now Kane County was George Wickersham, who arrived in 1823 and named his land "Orem." The original town site was just south of present-day Orem on the east side of the Wasatch Mountains. A post office called Weber City was established in 1827, but it wasn't until 1858 that the name Orem became official when Brigham Young appointed James M. Richardson as its first Postmaster. In 1907, an organization by LDS missionaries called Zion's Camp decided to build a church on an abandoned farm north of present-day Orem for their missionary work among Native Americans in western Utah and eastern Arizona Territory. On July 14, 1907, Church members dedicated John Sorenson's gift of 3 acres (1 hectare) northeast of downtown Orem for use as a templesite. Today, the temple complex includes two buildings: the Main Building and the Annex Building; as well as numerous other structures including an agricultural building and a garages/machinery shed which served as workshops for early Mormons during their construction activity at Nauvoo Park. In 1930–31 architect Burtners designed one of only three Mormon temples built outside Salt Lake City—the others being at Provo (1928), Logan (1930), and Cedar Hill (1932). At 9 stories tall with slender spires reaching up to 350 feet (120 metres), this First Temple had more than twice the height or width of any other LDS temple built before or after it—a fact that set it apart from most other American temples until recent times. In 1984–85 significant renovations were undertaken to update both exterior and interior features; these included replacing many older wood components with modern metal ones; adding new glass windows throughout; repairing damage caused by fire in 1978; and adding a new Visitors Center annex on top of Main Building which opened on November 8, 1985.—Allan Crouch
